This was the worst move they could possible make in the entire tv show
We are angry and we are right to feel angry, because let’s make things clear:
1- The show has been treating us like stupid people since the Glen dumpster accident back in 6x03
2- Awful plot holes with questionable character decisions like when Tara met Oceanside for the first time back in 7x06
3- And now Scott Gimple kills the character who was supposed to carry the torch for the future of the franchise
In the comics Carl is a such important character and his relationship with Lydia the daughter of the Whispers leader Alpha, is the key for the next story. Is true that Carl Grimes has a better plot in the comics than what he had in the tv show, but still, it was something logical to asume that he was gonna take a much more focal figure since Negan appeared.
Eight seasons of building up ultimately resulted in nothing.
Scott Gimple pretty much never understood why in the comics Rick kept Negan alive and didn’t kill him, putting him in jail.
Following the story of the comics you see that Rick did what he did because he is the good guy and Negan is the oposite. But how in the hell is the show going to make this tv show Rick Grimes not kill Negan and make it logical?. Why the death of his son would make Rick a pacifist?; the scene when Carl speaks to his father about mercy felt pretty much forced. Morgan spent one entire season trying to reason with Rick about not killing people, it would have made sense if it was Morgan the one who died and finally made Rick realized that he shouldn’t murder other people. But what did we got instead? Morgan being a pacifist back to a killer machine and this is silly, because season 6 doesn’t make any sense because of this.
And also the fact that the show is trying to make you believe Carl is a pacifist is unnatural. This whole thing seems to have come out of nowhere.

Not to mention it would be cool for him and rick to reconnect and actually talk, their relationship is seriously under utilised. It would also be somewhat poetic for his story w rick to come full circle

It did come put of nowhere. We just witnessed Carl in 7x16 be the one to start the gunfight at the gate when Sasha came out the coffin a walker. That, in show time, was only a couple of days earlier. When Carl was saved by Shiva he certainly seemed to be tryin to kill ‘em all. Something happened behind the scene and Carl’s death was a last minute decision because Carl “I did what I had to do” Grimes was no pacifist! agaes posted this
