For all of you hating on Mon-El and his characteristics, let me just remind you:
His parents were probably awful to him, as stated in two episodes. “You never met my parents, they weren’t exactly role-models” & If his father returned “I would run, because he was not a good man, so.”
He was probably raised a certain way by his parents, and when you’re raised a certain way, you can’t just erase it. You have to learn and grow from it as an adult and that takes time.
I’ve seen a few points comparing Barry’s encounter with Kara when he saved her, and Mon-El “protecting her honor”. Barry was raised on a similar earth, by a good adoptive father and had a loving family surrounding him despite losing his mother and father so young. That might not be the case for Mon-El, because of what he’s said, and who he is.
Despite everything, he’s trying. It has taken a while, but he’s learning about this new earth where he can chose which kind of man he wants to be, without the influence of his parents and being the prince of Daxam. He wants to be a hero, because he wants to be a better man than he was. Maybe he couldn’t be anything else there, because we still don’t know his full back story.
In the words of Melissa Benoist’s sister, Mon-El is his own person.
